Offshore Fish Facts

Wahoo
(Acanthocybium solandri)

How would you like to cozy up to this critter?? Wahoo are usually 10-50 pounds, often growing up to be 80 or 90 pounds of pure fighting machine. Their maximum weight can be around 150 pounds. Florida record for this fish is 139 lbs.

Wahoo strike at surface baits in spectacular, greyhound fashion. They seldom jump after being hooked. One of the fastest of all gamefish wahoos make a wild fight characterized by several sizzling runs at or near the surface.

Best rigs to catch them are light to medium ocean trolling outfit with lines up to 30 lb test. Best bait is a weighted black & red feather lure rigged with whole small baitfish. Deep trolling is best for these game fighters. When you hook one, we're sure you'll yell, "WAHoo!!".

Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus)

This is the Atlantic sailfish commonly found in Florida waters. They average 30-60 pounds. Some up to 100 pounds have been caught & released. They can grow up to 150 pounds and 7 feet in length. They feed on the surface or at mid depths. World record for these fish is 221 lbs; Florida record is 116 pounds.

Live bait sailfishing with a light ocean trolling rig is the best way to catch these magnificent fish with their spectacular leaps & rolls. Their favorite baits are Blue runners, goggle-eyes, pilchards & pinfish. Fly casters have also taken them on occasion.

Fall and winter are the best times of the year to try and catch them, but they are available here year round. These fish are a protected gamefish and are only available for catch and release.

Marlin (Makaira nigricans)

Blue and white marlin are found in our offshore waters in increasing numbers. White marlin grow to 50-100 pounds, and 8 feet in length. They have an unusual method of catching their prey. They use their bills to stun fish & then turn to consume them.

The blue marlin is the largest of the Atlantic marlins, commonly growing to 11 feet long and weighing in at 2,000+ pounds. Strangely enough, the larger fish are females; males do not exceed 300 pounds. Their favorite food is squid and other pelagic fishes, including blackfin tuna and frigate mackerel.

A good, balanced trolling rig will be useful in catching either of these equally powerful fighters. Lures are used most often because they allow more ocean area to be covered. Spring and summer is the best time to catch these fish.

Kingfish (Scomberomorous cavalla)

King mackerel, a.k.a. kingfish, are a schooling fish that migrates from south Florida waters in winter to more northerly waters in spring. Winter is the best time to catch a king. They average 12-20 pounds and make excellent eating steaked up or smoked. Florida and World Record: 90 pounds.

Kings are as fast as wahoos. They are strong & sizzling fighters at any size. Trolling rigs generally are ocean outfits with 20-40 lb test, but kings of all sizes can be caught on, spinning, baitcasting and even fly tackle.

Fishing with pilchards, chum, and live bail is usually the most productive system of all. Spoons trolled behind planers are good, as are rigged cigar minnows and feather minnow combinations.

Dolphin (Dorado-Mahi-Mahi)

We're not going into the Flipper thing here!! No way this fish looks like Flipper!

Dolphin is also a schooling fish like the kingfish usually found in warn waters usually 250 feet or deeper. They are a scavenger fish eating anything but the kitchen sink. Favorite baits are ballyhoo and glass minnows.

Schooling fish run in similar sizes from around l pound to nearly 20 at times. Larger fish are loners. Big bulls often reach 50-80 pounds; females top at 40 lbs. When the dolphin are running down here from May to July (their spawning season), you can actually get sick of eating fish there's so much of it around.
